W magazynie „RedakcjaBB“ ukazał się mój anglojęzyczny tekst „Disabled People In The Fashion Industry“, w którym zwracam uwagę na niepełnosprawnych ludzi funkcjonujących w świecie mody. Całość dostępna w drugim numerze gazety, a teraz także na moderndistrict.pl! Publikuję również kolaż stworzony na potrzeby tekstu.

„Disabled People In The Fashion Industry“
When we read about designers fashion shows, we always have in our minds an image of beautiful models crossing the catwalk. They are perfect, very tall and slim, with a original face wearing thousands of dollars worth of intricately tailored couture. Have you ever asked yourself how it would look if the runways were taken over by disable people?
At the New York Fashion Week actress Jamie Brewer graced the runway as a part of Carrie Hammer’s fashion show. She made a piece of fashion history. We all know that Fashion Weeks are always about aspirations. But designer Carrie Hammer wants the audience at her show to aspire to something different, that is why, she has made it her mission to invite role models over actual runway models. Jamie Brewer is known for her work on American Horror Story. She became the first model with Down syndrome to ever walk at New York Fashion Week! It’s happening on our eyes! Fashion industry is opening for people who are disabled in some way and that is beautiful.
Let’s face it, most people, disabled and non-disabled are not represented by adverts or high-fashion magazines or even television programmes. It’s tough but it’s true. Jamie Brewer is a small light in the tunnel to prove that disable people are as interesting and as beautiful as professional models, stylists or even hairdressers! In Cracow there is a hairdresser that was born without right hand. He fought for his dreams and now he is well known artist based in Cracow.
Jilian Mercado is another example of disabled person that is a part of fashion industry. She was a star of Diesel spring 2014 campaign. She was very motivated to achieve her dream even with loss of muscle that put her on the wheelchair. Angela Rockwood is also moves in a wheelchair. She lost feeling in her legs 11 years ago in a car crash. Although she has more energy than many able-bodied people! She stars in a reality show “Push Girls”. It is a story about four girls who although are chained to wheelchairs, don’t t give up and fight for a decent and fulfilling life. Before she had the accident she had been dreaming about becoming a fashion model. Her dream has come true with Nordstrom company which has worked with people with disabilities since 1991, so the choice of Rockwood as the star of the campaign was a natural course of things.
There are many examples of people with disabilities, who are taking part in the campaigns promoting clothes and accessories made by well-known brands. It’s hard to tell whether disabled people are not treated as well as other models. Of course everybody admires them for their obstacles. But are they included in the campaigns or fashion shows just to attract attention to the designers?
